Teacher-Created Digital Storytelling Example - Emperor Penguins

I have created a digital storytelling example for my culmulating project for my EME 5050 Fundamentals of Technology for Educators class.

I teach first grade so the project would be used in conjunction with a science unit on animals and their habitats. My students will be given a specific penguin and have to research specific information on the penguin through a curriculum page of resources. Once they have found necessary information, each student will create a Prezi presentation like the example provided, including a self-drawn picture of the penguin.

I invite you to check out my Prezi presentation and tell me what you think of it (did you like it, what do I need to tweak on it, etc.).

I really appreciate hearing from you!

  1. I realize that your Prezi has to imitate something 1st graders are capable of, so it can't be too complex. However, if you still have time to add to your Prezi, my chief suggestion would be to avoid the repetition of transitioning to the penguin picture and to your title, and replace those transitions with pictures or even a short YouTube video to illustrate your text.

"Antarctica," "Leopard seals," "Krill" are just some of the nouns the students might need some visual help will. For example, showing on a larger map where Antarctica is might help the students from making that common assumption that penguins live near the North Pole.

The probably don't know what krill looks like. Obviously you won't show a penguin being eaten by a Leopard seal, unless you think your kids would go for that. I'm afraid my knowledge of 1st graders is limited to my own very dated memory of my 1st grade.

Cool idea for an assignment though. Penguins seem very popular right now.

I can't imagine trying this with 1st graders - I'm rather anxious about trying it with my 5th graders! Will you be using this in conjunction with your Penguin center? You have included a lot of good information for your students, I might suggest pictures of real penguins? Good job!

  3. Trying to create a digital storytelling project can be tough with the younger grades. I think that your idea is great but I would probably make this project a teacher and student project. I am not sure that 1st graders would be able to make the video on their own and many parents probably wouldn't be able too either. I liked your example. The only thing I would recommend is changing the "route" to not go back to the title after every fact.

I love the penguin idea and kids enjoy learning about those funny little birds!

  4. KWhite,
I appreciate your feedback on my penguin page. Since my goal is to have my first graders complete the project with my help, I am going to try to keep it very simple. I have 18 students so it's going to take some time. I agree that the transitions are a bit much. I am going to adjust my layout.

    Thanks,
    Pat

  5. Linda,
I appreciate your feedback. I am going to give it a go with my class. I have computer lab time four days a week so I can work one-on-one with my students to create their own. I am going to use this project along with my penguin center. Your fifth graders can do it! I will keep you updated on my progress!

  6. JennaK,
Thanks so much for your feedback on my project. I am planning on working one-on-one with my students to create their presentations. I know that it will test my patience but I'm going to give it a try. I agree about the route on my presentation and took out the repeated paths to the title and penguin picture. Good luck on your presentation!

    Thanks,
    Patrick
